Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed that his rift with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, arises from Wike’s alleged intention to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. During a media chat in Ibadan, Makinde recounted a meeting where Wike reportedly declared, “I will hold the PDP for you against 2027,” which shocked him.

While Makinde accepted Wike’s right to support the President, he emphasized the need for diversity in political support to prevent a drift toward a one-party system. Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, responded by labeling Makinde selfish and unloyal, accusing him of prioritizing his personal ambitions over party loyalty.

Makinde noted attempts to engage Wike to reconsider his stance were unsuccessful, and he expressed concern that Wike’s pledge was made without the President’s endorsement. He reiterated his vision for a competitive multi-party democracy as critical for national stability, warning against the dangers of undermining opposition parties.

The discussion also touched on Makinde’s political ambitions, where he asserted his qualifications to vie for higher office, citing his governance experience and achievements. He criticized the ongoing loyalty crisis within the PDP, insisting that the party remains intact despite internal disputes.

Makinde concluded by emphasizing his desire for his administration to build strong institutions rather than rely solely on infrastructure, asserting that governance requires sustained leadership that transcends individual tenures.
