The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly denied endorsing any aspirant for the 2027 governorship election or other political offices in Rivers State, emphasizing that the authority to select candidates rests exclusively with the state’s elders.

Wike stated that the responsibility lies with the Rivers Elders Council, led by Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, underscoring that no individual holds the power to impose candidates on the electorate. His remarks reinforce the principle of collective decision-making within party and stakeholder structures.

The minister reiterated his current political commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, clarifying that this remains the only endorsement he has made.

The statements were delivered during a joint meeting of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

Addressing concerns about political succession in Rivers State, Wike cautioned against attempts to impose candidates, warning that such practices would likely be resisted by voters. He further highlighted the role of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, in shaping ongoing political developments.

Wike also called for unity among members of the emerging cross-party coalition, noting that cohesion—not financial influence—remains its primary strength. He alleged that external actors were attempting to undermine the coalition due to its growing political relevance.

Additionally, the minister criticized certain political appointees for turning against the group’s leadership, describing such actions as indicative of poor character. He maintained that political advancement through deceptive means would ultimately fail.

Reaffirming his earlier position, Wike dismissed reports of any covert endorsements, stating that the only recognized backing at present is for the presidency. He commended local government chairmen, elders, and party leaders for fostering inclusiveness and coordination, describing the absence of dissent at the meeting as a sign of effective stakeholder engagement.
