Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s appeal for birthday donations to complete the National Library in Abuja, labeling it an indictment of Nigeria’s leadership priorities.

In a post on his X account, Obi acknowledged the First Lady’s request as “noble and selfless,” but argued that it highlights the government’s failure to meet its responsibilities. He stated, “It is shocking that, in our present circumstances, while billions are easily found for jets, yachts, and other frivolities, the nation must rely on birthday donations to complete its own National Library.”

Obi emphasized that reliance on charity for such fundamental needs reflects a tragic neglect of education. He expressed concern over the priorities of leaders who spend lavishly while critical institutions remain underfunded.

He concluded with a stark warning: “If Nigeria will rise, it will not be on the wings of jets or the splendour of mansions, but on the strength of minds formed in classrooms and nourished in libraries. Until then, the lament remains true, we are finished.”
