A fuel tanker crash occurred near St. Louis College in Jos, Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 16 others.
The incident took place on Sunday evening when the tanker reportedly lost its brakes after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout, leading to a collision with several vehicles.
Confirming the incident, Peter Longsan, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), mentioned that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, while the deceased have been taken to Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH).
The FRSC, along with police, military, and fire service personnel, promptly cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to prevent further accidents. Longsan described the crash as involving a laden tanker and five other vehicles, with the FRSC alerted at 6:49 PM.
Eyewitnesses reported that after losing brake control, the tanker veered off and eventually crashed, coming to rest on stationary vehicles. Fortunately, there was no spillage of the fuel, lowering the risk of a fire outbreak.
The Minister commended the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved in the rescue operation. Longsan emphasized the importance of road safety, urging users to remain vigilant and report any incidents to the FRSC’s emergency number.
He called on all road users to stay safe and practice defensive driving as they head into the New Year.
