In a bold move, former U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed the military to prepare for action in Nigeria, citing a failure by the Nigerian government to protect Christians from Islamist militant groups. His comments come in the context of rising concerns about violence against Christians in Nigeria, which Trump claims has escalated to a level of genocide. However, reports from monitoring groups indicate that there is no evidence suggesting Christians are being targeted more than Muslims in a country where both religions coexist.

An advisor to Nigeria’s president, Daniel Bwala, emphasized that any military action against jihadist groups should be a collaborative effort. He stated that Nigeria welcomes U.S. support in addressing the threat of insurgents, but also underscored the country’s sovereignty. Bwala noted that jihadists have attacked individuals from all faiths, not targeting one group specifically.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has reiterated his commitment to religious tolerance, asserting that the ongoing security challenges affect people across various faiths and regions. In a social media post, Trump warned that if the Nigerian government fails to act, he might send U.S. troops into Nigeria “guns-a-blazing,” further threatening to cut all aid to what he referred to as “the now disgraced country.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded affirmatively to Trump’s directive, stating that the Department of War is preparing for action and stressing the need for the Nigerian government to protect its Christian population. This declaration has caused alarm within Nigeria, with many citizens urging their government to intensify efforts against Islamist groups to prevent foreign intervention.

Bwala, who identifies as a Christian pastor, remarked that while Trump’s statements may not be taken literally, they reflect a desire to assist Nigeria in combating insecurity. He expressed hope for a meeting between Trump and Tinubu to discuss the situation further.

Adding to the complexity, Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing severe violations of religious freedom. This designation allows for potential sanctions against countries deemed to be engaging in such violations.

Tinubu responded to Trump’s characterization, asserting that it does not accurately reflect Nigeria’s reality and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working with the U.S. and the international community to protect all communities.

Despite ongoing violence from groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, which have claimed thousands of lives in northeastern Nigeria, most victims have been Muslims, according to political violence analysts. Central Nigeria continues to see deadly clashes between predominantly Muslim herders and Christian farming communities, further complicating the narrative of religious persecution.

As Trump faces increasing pressure from right-wing factions in the U.S. to address the situation in Nigeria, the response from both Nigeria’s leadership and its citizens remains pivotal in determining the future of U.S.-Nigeria relations and the stability of the region.
