The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed that six individuals have died and 14 vehicles were destroyed following a devastating truck explosion near Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway on the evening of March 19, 2025.
According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 7:14 PM when a Dangote trailer, heavily loaded with cement, lost control and collided with stationary vehicles trapped in traffic. The explosion ignited a massive fire, engulfing the vehicles and creating widespread panic among bystanders and motorists.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh provided details, stating that the accident happened at around 6:58 PM. The trailer, approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, crashed into the stopped vehicles, leading to the tragic outcome. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped.
Despite their efforts, six victims were confirmed dead at local hospitals. Their remains have since been transferred to the morgue at Karu General Hospital.
The FCT Police Command expressed deep condolences to the families affected by this tragic incident and confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident. They urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent future tragedies.
Additionally, Abdulrahman Mohammed, Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department, also extended sympathies to those impacted. He emphasized the need for drivers to be vigilant and follow traffic rules, highlighting the importance of safety on the roads.
Firefighters from both the FCT Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service were deployed to control the blaze, restoring normal traffic flow after the situation was stabilized.
