President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established a special welfare fund to support members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, particularly those injured in service and families of fallen soldiers.
As part of the initiative, the President pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office in May 2023 as the seed fund.
The announcement was made during activities marking his 74th birthday, which he described as an opportunity to honour the sacrifice and dedication of military personnel.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a dedicated account for the fund.
The fund is expected to cater for wounded service members, as well as widows, widowers, and children of military personnel who lost their lives while serving the country.
Tinubu said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring that those who defend Nigeria are not neglected.
He called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund.
The President stressed that supporting military personnel is not an act of charity but a national duty owed to those who risk their lives for the country’s security.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, assuring that their service would be recognised with dignity, care, and sustained support.
