Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has asserted that some of Nigeria’s so-called “Yahoo boys” possess remarkable talents that simply need redirection rather than condemnation. He made these remarks in a post titled “Our Youths Need Redirection” on his verified X account.

Obi recently attended a youth event in Onitsha, invited by the Archbishop of All Saints’ Cathedral. He emphasized the theme “Money Beyond Wealth,” discussing the negative impact of material greed on societal values.

He stated, “While money is important, it is merely a fragment of true wealth. Real wealth is rooted in integrity, character, and purpose.” Obi highlighted that genuine wealth uplifts individuals and society alike, promoting education and reducing poverty.

He noted that many “Yahoo boys” are innovative thinkers whose creativity, if properly guided, could contribute to national development. “Our challenge is to channel their energy into productive enterprises,” he remarked.

Obi cautioned against the reckless pursuit of money, which he believes damages both character and community. He called for leadership that exemplifies integrity, warning that a nation rewarding dishonesty undermines its core values.

He encouraged young people to embrace hard work and innovation, stating, “Nations are built not by miracles but by those who think, work, and build.” He concluded by urging for justice, fairness, and merit in Nigeria, asserting that these principles would lead to the nation’s greatness.

Obi expressed gratitude to Most Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo for his guidance and commended the organizers of the Golden Health Conference for promoting ethical leadership and moral renewal among the youths.
