The Anambra State government has clarified that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s recent promise to reward political wards where the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) wins in the upcoming November 8 election is intended to combat voter apathy, not to engage in vote-buying.

Responding to accusations from opposition parties, press secretary Mr. Christian Aburime emphasized that the incentives are meant to encourage voter participation rather than compromise electoral integrity. He stated, “It’s essential to examine the context in which the statement was made.”

Governor Soludo reiterated that the goal of the incentives is to motivate party canvassers to engage voters effectively. He urged supporters not to assume victory without casting their votes, affirming APGA’s commitment to a fair electoral process.

Aburime compared the incentives to a manufacturer rewarding marketers for increased sales, asserting that the rewards for canvassers after the election do not constitute vote-buying. “Members of political parties make up less than five percent of voters,” he noted, explaining that the focus is on mobilizing broader voter participation.

The governor has consistently emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, partnering with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure every vote counts. The government views the incentives as a necessary measure to address the significant issue of voter apathy observed in past elections.
