Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has defended his controversial remark that any politician promising to serve only one term should undergo psychiatric evaluation. In an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, he clarified that his comments were made in the context of ongoing debates regarding zoning in Anambra politics.
Soludo explained that such promises have historically been employed as deceptive tactics to sway voters. He recounted previous instances, particularly during his predecessor’s campaign in 2017, where similar promises were met with skepticism by the electorate.
“Politicians come with sweeteners like ‘if you vote for me, I will only serve one term,’ but they are being disingenuous,” he stated. He emphasized that these pledges insult the intelligence of the people and undermine the established zoning arrangement that rotates power among the North, South, and Central senatorial districts.
The governor criticized current candidates from the South making one-term promises, asserting that they fail to recognize the implications of their commitments and what voters truly deserve.
“Anyone making such promises is either deliberately deceitful or has a mental issue,” Soludo concluded, reinforcing his stance against misleading political tactics.
