In a decisive move, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has canceled the recent election for the traditional ruler of the Oba Community in Idemili South Local Government Area. The governor’s announcement comes amid concerns that no legitimate election took place to appoint a new Igwe (traditional ruler) for the community.
Governor Soludo stressed that any actions taken regarding the purported election are considered illegal and criminal. In a statement delivered by Chief Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government and Town Union Affairs, it was made clear that the situation is complicated by a pending court case concerning the election of a new traditional ruler.
As part of his directive, Governor Soludo has instructed the state police command to arrest anyone who claims to be the traditional ruler or acts as such in the community. He emphasized that until the legal matters are resolved, the Oba community will remain without a recognized monarch.
This cancellation highlights the governor’s commitment to upholding legal and constitutional standards in traditional leadership processes, ensuring that the community’s governance aligns with established laws.
