The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has ordered that all enforcement actions regarding the proposed ban on sachet alcohol products be suspended until further notice. This directive follows correspondence from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control concerning the enforcement of the ban by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Terrence Kuanum, it was noted that the correspondence, dated November 13, 2025, is currently under review. The SGF’s office is considering this matter in its statutory coordinating role and has stated, “all actions, decisions, or enforcement measures relating to the proposed sachet alcohol ban be suspended pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive.”

The statement further clarified that any action taken by NAFDAC or any other agency on this issue, without clearance from the SGF’s office, should be disregarded until a final decision is formally communicated. The SGF assured that all relevant legislative resolutions, economic implications, public health concerns, and broader national interests are being thoroughly examined.

This move comes after NAFDAC’s announcement that the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and bottles smaller than 200 millilitres would be banned by December 2025. The agency’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that this decision aims to tackle the misuse of cheap alcoholic drinks among youths and drivers.

The directive from the SGF also reflects renewed pressure from the National Assembly, which has urged NAFDAC to suspend the enforcement in line with previous resolutions passed since 2024.
