Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has made serious allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Speaking on ARISE TV, she claimed that Akpabio has been punishing her for refusing his advances.
The accusations come after a heated exchange between the two, prompted by a change in Akpoti’s Senate seat without her consent. This incident led to her referral to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary action.
In her interview, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated that she possesses evidence, including WhatsApp conversations with Akpabio, and mentioned that her husband could also corroborate her claims. She recounted an incident from December 8, 2023, during a visit to Akpabio’s home, where he allegedly suggested she spend “special moments” with him.
The senator expressed frustration over the handling of her motion regarding issues at the Ajaokuta Steel Company, which she claimed was repeatedly sidelined by Akpabio. She asserted that he implied she could gain favor by being accommodating.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has since filed a N100.3 billion lawsuit against Akpabio for fundamental human rights violations. Meanwhile, Akpabio’s media aide has not responded to inquiries regarding the allegations.
The unfolding situation has raised concerns about the conduct of public officials and the treatment of women in politics, as Akpoti-Uduaghan seeks to bring attention to her claims.
