First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has expressed support for the Senate amid ongoing controversies, particularly concerning the allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In a statement through her spokesperson, Bukola Kukoyi, the First Lady emphasized that the Senate is acting appropriately in its handling of the situation.
Oluremi Tinubu encouraged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles, stating that they should not be sidelined. She remarked on the importance of maintaining the integrity and respect of the Senate as a mature chamber.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was recently suspended for six months following a report from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, which investigated her alleged breaches of Senate rules. Her absence during the committee meeting raised concerns, as she failed to appear despite being duly invited.
The tensions escalated after a heated exchange between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Akpabio regarding seating arrangements, during which she accused him of publicly humiliating her and obstructing her legislative efforts. The committee chairman expressed disappointment over her absence, reinforcing the need for accountability within the Senate.
