The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed optimism that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State will end on September 18. He made this statement after casting his vote in the local government elections in the state.
Wike noted that the expiration of the emergency rule would allow the state House of Assembly to resume its legislative duties. He emphasized that the elections were conducted peacefully, with a good turnout from voters.
According to Wike, the conditions are favorable for lifting the state of emergency, as both the state and local governments now have representatives in place. He remarked that the situation is clear for the state government to return to normalcy.
The state of emergency was initially imposed by President Bola Tinubu to prevent a political crisis, resulting in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months.
