The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) for the Nigerian Army in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. This demand follows the tragic killing of over 200 residents by suspected armed attackers on June 14.

During a plenary session, Hon. Dickson Tarkighir, representing the Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, moved the motion, describing the attack as part of a “devastating and recurrent pattern of violent assaults” in the region. He expressed grave concerns over the slow government response and warned that further inaction could lead to more casualties.

Tarkighir stated, “Over 200 indigenes of Yelwata were brutally murdered. Thousands have been displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods ruined.”

In response to the crisis, the House has mandated its Committees on Interior and National Security to conduct an immediate fact-finding mission to Yelwata and other affected communities in Guma LGA. This mission aims to assess the damage and develop a strategic response plan.

The lawmakers also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide urgent relief materials, medical support, and temporary shelter for displaced residents.

Additionally, the Committee on Human Rights has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the Yelwata killings to ensure justice is served and to address the underlying causes of the ongoing insecurity in the area.

The establishment of a military base in Yelwata is seen as a critical step in restoring security and stability in Benue State.
