A significant power struggle has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, as Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme and Senator Ned Nwoko vie for leadership of the party in the Delta North Senatorial District. The conflict intensifies ahead of an important APC meeting scheduled for June 14 at Nwoko’s residence.

Nwoko, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is viewed by some in the party as the senior figure in Delta North. However, Onyeme contends that the deputy governor traditionally holds the role of political convener in the region, citing historical precedents from past administrations.

In a statement released by his Press Secretary, Onyeme emphasized the need for unity within the party and proposed a private meeting with Nwoko to avert factionalism. He referenced how previous deputy governors facilitated political gatherings in Delta North, suggesting that he should assume a similar role.

Contrarily, supporters of Nwoko argue that as a high-ranking party official, he rightfully holds the leadership position. A senior APC member asserted that Nwoko’s status as a senator grants him the authority to lead the party in the district.

The leadership dispute has reignited tensions within the APC, particularly since Nwoko’s departure from the PDP earlier this year, which was reportedly fueled by frustrations over not being appointed as the party’s senatorial leader.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has defended the political realignment that brought him and other former PDP members to the APC, asserting that this move is crucial for Delta’s growth ahead of the 2027 elections. He dismissed claims that the administration is losing control, reaffirming their commitment to development.

As the party prepares for the upcoming meeting, all eyes will be on Onyeme and Nwoko to see if they can resolve their differences or if the rift will worsen, potentially impacting APC’s unity in Delta State.
