Authorities in Edo State have confirmed the arrest of students linked to a widely circulated bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City.
The incident, which sparked public outrage after videos surfaced online, showed students physically assaulting a fellow student through beating, kicking, and other forms of violence.
According to a statement from the Edo State Police Command, all individuals connected to the case have been identified and apprehended following a detailed investigation. The suspects are expected to be charged in a family court in line with laws governing juvenile justice and child protection.
Preliminary findings revealed that the situation began on March 5, 2026, when two 14-year-old female students got into a disagreement with another student. The conflict escalated after the student reportedly made a derogatory remark about their late father. In response, the girls allegedly attacked the student after school hours.
During the altercation, a parent who had come to pick up her child attempted to intervene but was also assaulted by the girls, who reportedly dragged her clothing. The school management later stepped in and expelled the students involved in that initial incident.
The following day, a retaliatory attack occurred. The son of the assaulted parent allegedly confronted and attacked another student—identified as the brother of the girls involved in the earlier altercation. This second incident was recorded and shared online, drawing widespread attention and condemnation.
In response, the police have intensified efforts to prevent similar occurrences by strengthening the Operation Safe Schools Initiative across secondary schools in the state. The initiative aims to improve supervision, identify gaps in school safety, and promote better student conduct.
Additionally, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has been activated to engage students and school authorities through awareness campaigns and behavioural reorientation programmes.
The police also urged parents, guardians, and school administrators to take a more active role in monitoring and guiding students, emphasizing the importance of addressing grievances through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.
The Edo State Ministry of Education has also condemned the incident, describing such behaviour as unacceptable and contrary to the values expected in educational institutions. School authorities have assured the public that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence.
