Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for greater collaboration among opposition leaders after ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Obi described Kwankwaso’s decision as a key moment in efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

Obi revealed that he had visited Kano on Monday at Kwankwaso’s invitation. Referring to the former governor as an “elder brother,” Obi highlighted that his visit coincided with Kwankwaso’s announcement to defect to the ADC.

He emphasized that opposition parties and concerned Nigerians must set aside their differences and unite to tackle the country’s pressing issues.

Obi said:

“On Monday, March 30, I returned to Kano, the North’s commercial hub, at the invitation of my dear elder brother, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. His decision to join our party represents another important step in our collective mission to restore and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

“Now is the time for all opposition forces and patriotic Nigerians to put aside divisions and work together with a shared purpose.

“We must move beyond politics driven by ethnicity, religion, or region, and instead prioritize competence, integrity, capacity, and a commitment to building a better nation.

“Our goal goes beyond winning elections; it is about rebuilding institutions, restoring trust in governance, and securing a brighter future for the next generation.”

Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC has already generated significant political commentary, with reactions ranging from skepticism to support across the nation.
