Prof. Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of Information, stated that if Peter Obi returns to the PDP, he would defeat any Northern candidate in the 2027 presidential election. Gana made this assertion during an interview on Arise TV, amid speculation about Obi’s potential return to the party after his recent engagements with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gana emphasized that the PDP has strong grassroots support, asserting that “our people are very fair-minded and just.” He revealed ongoing efforts to bring Obi back into the PDP fold, leading a team to reach out to him. Gana acknowledged that the PDP mishandled Obi’s exit before the 2023 elections, suggesting that a more welcoming approach could have been beneficial.
Addressing recent internal party crises, Gana noted that these issues are largely confined to a few elites in Abuja and do not reflect the broader sentiment among the party’s base. He reiterated that the PDP was founded as a grassroots organization, recalling its significant role in restoring democracy in Nigeria. Gana concluded by stressing the need for unity and a focus on grassroots engagement to overcome current challenges.
