Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has expressed profound sadness regarding the recent stampedes during food palliative distributions that have resulted in multiple fatalities across Nigeria.
In a series of heartbreaking incidents, approximately 40 children lost their lives in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. Shortly after, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja, at least 10 individuals died while scrambling for rice and other palliatives. Additionally, reports from Okija in Anambra State indicate that at least 17 residents perished in a similar struggle for food.
Reacting to these tragedies on social media, Obi described the events as symptomatic of systemic failures plaguing the nation. He expressed deep concern that, despite Nigeria’s wealth of natural resources and fertile land, many citizens are facing hunger and desperation.
“I am deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic loss of lives in desperate searches for food,” Obi stated. He reflected on the stark reality that, in a nation blessed with resources, people are dying from hunger. The former governor lamented the extremes to which individuals are driven in their quest for survival amid harsh economic conditions.
Obi emphasized that while he appreciates the efforts of those organizing palliative distributions, these tragic events highlight a dire need for systemic change. He acknowledged the good intentions behind these initiatives but underscored that such desperation should not result in loss of life.
In his heartfelt message, he extended condolences to the families of the victims, recognizing the immense pain they are enduring. “My heart goes out to them. I sincerely commiserate with all the affected families and the good people of Oyo, Anambra, and the FCT over these tragic incidents.”
Obi concluded with prayers for the departed souls and wishes for a swift recovery for the injured. His statements resonate with a broader call for reflection on Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges and the urgent need for effective solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
