The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have decided to contest President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, asserting that Section 305(3) of the Constitution requires judicial interpretation.

Following a Zoom meeting, the PDP governors, led by Chairman and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, expressed solidarity with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the residents during this turbulent period. They condemned Tinubu’s recent actions, which included suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly for six months, appointing Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the sole administrator.

In their communiqué, the governors emphasized their commitment to upholding the Constitution and defending democratic governance. They instructed their state Attorneys General to challenge the constitutionality of the emergency declaration.

The governors stated, “The Forum stands in solidarity with His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and the good people of Rivers State at this very difficult and trying moment of the state’s political history.”

This move comes as Rivers State has experienced prolonged political instability, with ongoing conflicts between former Governor Nyesom Wike and Fubara, leading to the current governance crisis.
