A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong disapproval of the withdrawal of several chairmanship candidates from the upcoming Abuja Local Council elections. The faction described this move as “anti-democratic” and indicative of deeper issues within the party’s leadership.

In a statement released on social media, the National Working Committee of the PDP voiced its “utter dismay” at the developments, citing the withdrawal as symptomatic of a troubling trend. The statement accused certain leaders within the party of promoting a system the faction termed “voodoo democracy,” which they claim undermines the core principles of democracy.

Highlighting the potential implications for the forthcoming presidential elections, the statement warned of possible manipulations aimed at facilitating an easy ride for the sitting president. They referenced similar tactics in the past, stating it could lead to candidates being coerced into stepping aside.

The PDP has previously taken action against behaviors it deems detrimental to its objectives, emphasizing its commitment to rebuilding a strong opposition in preparation for the 2027 elections. The statement called on voters to protect their ballots during the upcoming elections.

Notably, Julius Adamu, the PDP chairmanship candidate for the Bwari Area Council election, recently withdrew from the race in favor of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Joshua Musa, during an event attended by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
