As part of ongoing efforts to resolve internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a high-level reconciliation team led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki held a closed-door meeting with Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on Friday.
The visit marked the beginning of consultations by the PDP’s Special Reconciliation Committee, which was recently inaugurated by the PDP Governors’ Forum to forestall a possible breakdown of unity ahead of the party’s forthcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and a likely national convention.
Accompanying Saraki were former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson and former Gombe State Governor Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo. The meeting took place at the Government House, Enugu.
The crisis in the party’s South East chapter has escalated following the zonal leadership’s re-nomination of Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary, a decision met with threats of defection if not respected.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Saraki emphasized the importance of unity and praised Governor Mbah’s leadership both in Enugu and within the PDP. He noted that Enugu was chosen as the first stop because of the region’s strategic significance to the party.
“We’ve had very productive discussions with Governor Mbah. The South East has always been a critical pillar of the PDP, and we recognize the need to engage closely with its leaders,” Saraki said.
He added that the committee’s mission is to ensure a smooth and peaceful NEC and convention process, stressing that the Enugu meeting had laid a strong foundation for a revitalized PDP.
“What we’ve seen here today is that the challenges facing us are not insurmountable. The commitment of our leaders is inspiring, and we’re optimistic about the future,” Saraki concluded.
