In a significant development for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, announced that the party’s elective convention is confirmed to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State. This declaration comes amidst ongoing disputes within the party, as factions navigate conflicting court rulings regarding the legitimacy of the convention.
The announcement was made following a crucial stakeholders’ meeting held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, where key party figures gathered to discuss strategic plans for the convention. Notable attendees included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and ex-Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Tanimu Turaki.
Governor Fintiri expressed enthusiasm about the convention, stating, “We’ve just come out of our critical stakeholders’ meeting where a lot of elaborate decisions were taken.” He stressed that the convention is “sacrosanct,” indicating the party’s commitment to moving forward despite potential challenges.
While details on the specific outcomes of the meeting remain scarce, Fintiri’s assurance reflects an effort to unify the party as it faces internal divisions stemming from legal controversies. The convention is expected to be pivotal for the PDP, as the elected officials will play crucial roles in shaping the party’s future ahead of upcoming elections.
Efforts to seek further comments from Fintiri were unsuccessful, as he was quickly escorted away by his security personnel. However, his announcement has reignited discussions about the party’s direction and unity as it prepares for what promises to be a contentious event.
