The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Edo State government of prioritizing the interests of its political godfathers while allowing a surge in kidnapping and violent crimes to plague the state. In a statement by Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, the party claimed that Edo has become a “safe haven” for criminals, with citizens living in constant fear.

Nehikhare criticized the state’s Chief Security Officer, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his perceived failure to manage the escalating insecurity. He pointed out that despite receiving N750 million monthly in security votes, the funds are allegedly mismanaged, benefiting only political allies rather than addressing the pressing security issues faced by residents.

In response, Governor Okpebholo dismissed the PDP’s allegations as misleading, stating that they aim to scare off potential investors and distract the public from the security progress made during his administration. In a statement from his spokesperson, Fred Itua, the governor asserted that claims of Edo being the “capital of kidnapping” are unfounded and a reflection of the PDP’s own failures during their time in power.

He urged the PDP to acknowledge the ongoing improvements in security and economic stability under his leadership, citing the kidnapping of the party’s chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, as evidence of their own incompetence in managing security concerns.

This clash highlights the ongoing political tensions in Edo State as both parties vie for public support amid growing concerns over safety and governance.
