In a tragic escalation of violence, over 42 individuals, including a police officer, have been reported killed by suspected armed herdsmen in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State. This incident occurred just a day after a priest was attacked in the same region.
Sources indicate that the violence began on Saturday evening at Aondona community, resulting in over 20 fatalities. The attack spread to nearby areas such as Ahumbe, Tyolaha, and Tse Orbiam, where more than 22 people were murdered, including a two-year-old child.
Gwer West LGA Chairman, Victor Ormin, characterized the assault as genocide, stating, “We are still recovering corpses, and over 30 dead bodies have been found between Sunday and Monday.” He expressed outrage over the attacks, emphasizing the high profile of Aondona, which is the home of notable local figures.
The chairman lamented the limitations faced by local soldiers, who reportedly lack the authority to engage unless directly provoked. He criticized the federal government’s inaction, stating, “The military is waiting for orders that have not been given.”
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attacks, labeling them barbaric and supporting the recent directive from traditional rulers for armed herders to vacate the state. He reaffirmed his commitment to the safety of Benue’s residents and called for intensified efforts to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
