Abia State Governor Alex Otti has defended the recently completed ₦36.5 billion Port Harcourt Road project in Aba, criticizing his political opponents and former officials for their negative remarks. Speaking during a thanksgiving and carnival organized by the local community, Otti labeled the critics as “noise makers.”

The governor highlighted that the previous administration under Governor Okezie Ikpeazu had awarded a contract for the same road in 2017 for ₦9.8 billion, but the project was never completed. “In 2017, they paid the entire sum, yet the road was not finished,” Otti stated.

Otti justified the current expenditure by explaining that when adjusted for the average exchange rate in 2017, the previous contract was approximately $29 million. His administration, which took on the project in 2025, faced scrutiny for the significant cost, but he urged the public to consider the historical context.

In addition to the road project’s completion, Otti announced the upcoming deployment of 20 electric buses to enhance public transportation in Abia State. He also recognized a tricycle rider who returned ₦2.4 million left behind by a passenger, praising his honesty and rewarding him.

Community leaders expressed their gratitude, noting that the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road has revitalized many businesses in the area, contributing to the economic recovery of Aba.
