Victor Osimhen, the star striker for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has emphasized the need for the team to rectify their mistakes from the initial phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. After a disappointing start, where Nigeria drew three of their first four matches, Osimhen is determined to help his teammates regain their competitive edge as they prepare to face group leaders Rwanda, whom they trail by four points.
Osimhen, who missed most of the earlier qualifiers, expressed his commitment to the team during an appearance on John Obi Mikel’s podcast, stating, “We have to give everything. It is the dream of every youngster to be at the World Cup, mine is no exception.” He highlighted the importance of the upcoming match against Rwanda as a critical opportunity to correct past errors.
The Super Eagles have experienced significant coaching changes, with two different coaches overseeing their first four games. Jose Peseiro managed the initial matches, which ended in draws, while Finidi George took over for the last two, resulting in a loss and another draw. Following these results, Eric Sekou Chelle has now stepped in as the new head coach. Osimhen believes Chelle’s leadership can reinvigorate the team, noting that the coach is demanding and expects full commitment from every player.
Osimhen’s return to the squad is seen as vital, especially since Nigeria has struggled offensively, scoring only four goals in their first four games. His previous contributions in qualifiers have been significant, and his presence is expected to boost the team’s performance as they aim to secure victories in their remaining matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
