The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has rejected claims that it recently procured thallium sulphate, a highly toxic chemical substance, from Poland, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
The denial followed a disclosure by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, who alleged on X that opposition political leaders had information suggesting ONSA imported about 10 kilograms of the chemical. El-Rufai said he had written formally to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, seeking clarification on the alleged transaction.
In his letter, El-Rufai raised concerns about the hazardous nature of thallium compounds, noting that they are odourless, colourless, and extremely dangerous. He requested details on the purpose of the chemical importation, the intended end-user, supplier information, authorisation, storage arrangements, and whether agencies such as NAFDAC and the NCDC were involved.
However, a senior official at ONSA dismissed the claims, insisting that the agency did not procure the substance and that the allegations were untrue.
