The Benue State Government has announced the successful rescue of nine worshippers who were kidnapped during a midnight prayer session at Saint John Catholic Church in the Ojije area of Utonkon community. Governor Hyacinth Alia commended the quick response of security operatives, describing the rescue as a significant breakthrough.
In a statement from his Technical Adviser on Media, Solomon Iorpev, the governor expressed gratitude for the cooperation between conventional security forces and local vigilante groups, which contributed to the victims’ safe return. However, details about the kidnappers and the circumstances surrounding their rescue remain unclear.
The abduction, which occurred around 2 a.m. on a Sunday, had sparked fear across the community. Emmanuel Udah, a former councillor, labeled the crime a “targeted attack on the Church,” urging authorities to enhance security measures to mitigate future incidents.
The police confirmed that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N100 million but later reduced it to N30 million during negotiations. The state government has not disclosed whether any ransom was paid.
Following the incident, Governor Alia convened a security meeting to strategize against the rising incidences of kidnapping in the region, reiterating the need for public collaboration in reporting criminal activities.
