The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed its condolences to the Niger State Government following the devastating flood that has resulted in numerous fatalities in the Mokwa Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by NGF Chairman, AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, the forum expressed shock at the scale of the disaster, which has led to significant loss of life and property in the affected community. They extended their sympathies to Governor Usman Bago, the state government, and the citizens of Niger State.
Reports indicate that at least 21 people have died, with property damages amounting to millions of Naira due to the flooding in Mokwa.
AbdulRazaq, who is also the Governor of Kwara State, stated, “The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State during this tragic event. We are deeply shocked by the extent of the flooding, which has caused such loss of life and property.”
He continued, “We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and offer our support to the state government during this challenging time. We commend the efforts of the Niger State Government and emergency responders who are assisting the victims of this disaster.”
AbdulRazaq noted that this flood serves as a stark reminder of the realities of climate change and its impact on our lives. He affirmed the NGF’s commitment to collaborate with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to help communities cope with this global challenge and to enhance mitigation efforts.
“We pray for the families who have lost loved ones and property in Mokwa, and we urge citizens to support the government’s initiatives to address the impacts of climate change and to cooperate with agencies providing assistance to those in urgent need,” he added.
