Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has asserted that the new tax laws proposed by the Federal Government cannot take effect until existing controversies regarding their legitimacy are addressed. Speaking to reporters in his hometown of Ilawe-Ekiti, Falana highlighted concerns over allegations of improper insertions into the law’s provisions.

He criticized the government for failing to clarify these issues in the final days of 2025, asserting that the lack of clean copies of the legislation available by January 1, 2026, would lead to significant legal challenges. “If that was not done, the government would put itself in trouble by deciding to implement the laws. There are interest groups ready to challenge the legitimacy of the laws,” he warned.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s firm stance on the implementation of the tax laws starting January 1, 2026, Falana remains steadfast that their effectiveness hinges on resolving the outstanding legitimacy concerns. The situation remains fluid as various stakeholders are poised to challenge the laws should they move forward without rectification.
