The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a warning against extending the tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, expressed concerns that such an extension could diminish efficiency, foster division, and erode public confidence in the police force.
Akintola highlighted that the recent amendment to the Police Act, which permits Egbetokun to remain in office until the end of his appointed term, instead of retiring at age 60, is troubling.
He acknowledged the police force’s recent successes in improving security, including the rescue of numerous kidnapping victims and the resolution of high-profile crimes. However, he fears that extending Egbetokun’s tenure may undermine these achievements and create internal rifts.
“MURIC’s intervention is crucial, as we focus on promoting and protecting the fundamental human rights of Nigerian Muslims. While the IGP’s tenure may not directly pertain to Muslim rights, it impacts the security and welfare of all Nigerians, including Muslims,” he said.
The issue has sparked debate, with some arguing that continuity in leadership is necessary, while others view it as a violation of the Police Act. Akintola advised Egbetokun to resign gracefully to preserve his reputation, stating, “Real heroes leave the stage while the ovation is loudest.”
