In the wake of a tragic bombing in Sokoto State, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa has warned civilians against harboring suspected criminals. His remarks come after a Nigerian Air Force airstrike intended for Lakurawa terrorists mistakenly targeted the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities on Christmas Day, resulting in at least 10 civilian deaths and numerous injuries.

During his visit to the troops of Operation FASAN YANMA at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, Musa stated that villagers who protect criminals could face consequences. He urged residents to report any suspicious individuals and emphasized that the military would not accept responsibility for attacks on communities associated with militants.

Musa remarked, “If you harbor criminals, you are making yourself a legitimate target,” and reassured the public that an investigation would be conducted into the incident. He also highlighted the military’s commitment to combating security threats, pledging ongoing support to the troops.

In response to the bombing, Sokoto State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, along with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governor Aminu Tambuwal, has called for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Governor Aliyu visited the affected communities to assess the damage and offer condolences, announcing a donation of N20 million and food supplies to the victims’ families.

In a statement, Aliyu described the incident as “heartbreaking” and an “avoidable loss of life,” emphasizing the need for thorough communication with the Nigerian Army to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Atiku Abubakar condemned the airstrike, calling it an “outrage” and a gross violation of humanity. He stressed the need for precision in military operations and lamented the repeated loss of innocent lives in such attacks. Similarly, Tambuwal expressed shock and sympathy for the victims, emphasizing the importance of careful and accountable military action.

Both leaders called for a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice for the victims and urged the government to prioritize the safety of civilians in military operations. As the situation unfolds, the need for a balanced approach to security and the protection of innocent lives remains paramount.
