The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has condemned the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as both “a shame and a pity.” Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Johnson stressed the uncertainty surrounding the motivations for these defections.
He pointed out that, despite various governors shifting allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, such moves do not guarantee political success. “The elections will be held next year, and the ultimate decision lies with the people,” he remarked.
Johnson’s remarks follow significant defections from several governors, including Peter Mbah of Enugu, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, and Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who recently joined the APC.
As the NNPP faces internal strife, particularly concerning its Kano State stronghold, Johnson expressed concerns about potential party instability. He highlighted that Governor Abba Yusuf has yet to confirm any intentions to defect to the APC, despite rumors.
The party is currently coping with structural changes and legal disputes following a court ruling affirming the suspension of its state chairman, which could further complicate its position as it moves closer to the next election. Johnson cautioned that those departing for the APC might find themselves at a disadvantage, as the Kwankwasiyya movement remains steadfast.
