Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has linked the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party to an alleged plan by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to weaken the party in favour of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Makinde made the claim during a meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in Bauchi. He alleged that he was present at a meeting involving Wike and President Tinubu where the FCT minister reportedly pledged to “hold down” the PDP in preparation for the next general election.
According to Makinde, members of the PDP who align with Wike’s faction are indirectly supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid. He maintained that while individuals are free to support any candidate of their choice, they should be open about their political stance rather than operate within the party while backing opposing interests.
He further claimed that Wike’s group enjoys the backing of government institutions, including the judiciary and the electoral body, but insisted that his own faction has the support of the people.
