The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has confirmed that the crescent marking the start of Ramadan 2026 has been sighted across Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, verified reports of moon sightings were received from different parts of the country and were carefully authenticated before the announcement was made.
Represented by the Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, the Sultan declared that Muslims nationwide would commence the Ramadan fast today, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, which also marks the first day of Ramadan 1447AH.
Similarly, Christians begin the Lenten season today, as Catholic faithful observe Ash Wednesday, ushering in a period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion.
