The Lagos State Government is urging the intentional inclusion of qualified professionals in building projects to ensure the construction of durable structures. Olayinka Abdul, the General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, made this call during a recent 5.5km advocacy walk organized with the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers. The event aimed to raise awareness against building collapses under the theme, “Say No To Building and Infrastructure Collapse, Patronise Only Qualified Civil Engineers.”
In a statement, Abdul highlighted the pressing challenges faced in the construction industry, emphasizing the need for a renewed commitment to quality, safety, and the integrity of structures. She remarked, “We gather here united in purpose to mitigate risks leading to building collapses while promoting sustainable construction practices. The alarming statistics on building failures are disheartening.”
Abdul stressed that building collapses not only result in tragic loss of life but also cause significant economic damage and community trauma, undermining public trust in the construction industry. She advised, “Once you have an idea, engage the right professionals to assist in design and planning, which is crucial from materials procurement onward.”
She further encouraged Nigerians to avoid hiring unqualified individuals for their building projects, asserting that the complexities of construction require strict adherence to proper procedures to prevent structural failures.
Tokunbo Ajanaku, National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, praised the participants’ enthusiasm, stating, “What we have started is a journey to reclaim our profession and the integrity of the built environment.”
