Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso completed his registration and received his membership card on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.
The event drew several prominent political figures, including ADC National Chairman David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
His defection comes a day after he announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing the need for political realignment in response to the country’s evolving political dynamics.
In his statement, Kwankwaso described his exit from the NNPP as a difficult decision, given his long-standing involvement with the party. However, he noted that the current direction of national politics required him to align with a platform he believes offers a stronger chance of driving meaningful change.
He expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership, particularly the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and his supporters for their loyalty and commitment.
Kwankwaso also assured that despite his move, collaboration with his supporters would continue in pursuit of a better and more prosperous Nigeria.
His move to the ADC is expected to reshape political alliances and fuel ongoing discussions around a possible coalition ahead of the next general elections.
