Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has declined to present a defense in the terrorism charges against him, asserting that there are no valid charges filed. During a court session on Monday, Kanu, who has dismissed his legal team to represent himself, stated, “I have gone through my case file, and there is no charge against me.”

He urged the court to release him or grant bail, arguing that the prosecution lacks a legal basis for the charges. Presiding Judge James Omotosho intervened, explaining the legal procedures that follow a no-case submission and the implications of choosing not to enter a defense.

Kanu maintained his stance, insisting that he is being held under fraudulent charges, which he claims the Supreme Court has previously ruled against. Government counsel Adegboyega Awomolo argued that Kanu’s refusal to open a defense means he relies on the prosecution’s case, and requested the court set a date for judgment.

Judge Omotosho emphasized the importance of legal representation and advised Kanu to seek counsel experienced in criminal law, highlighting that he has a responsibility to ensure Kanu understands the legal process. The judge ultimately granted Kanu a seven-day period to consult with legal experts before the adjourned hearing dates of November 4, 5, and 6, indicating that if Kanu does not open his defense by then, the court will proceed based on the prosecution’s case.
