Umar Sani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a better choice for the North in the 2027 presidential race than Peter Obi, the 2023 candidate of the Labour Party. His comments were made during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics.
Sani argued that Jonathan’s potential return would complete eight years of southern leadership, following the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari from the North. He emphasized that Jonathan, by law, would be limited to a four-year term, contrasting this with Obi’s promise to serve a full term, which Sani views as less certain.
He stated, “Between somebody making a promise and somebody who is compelled by the law that he must leave, which one will you take?” He underscored the belief that Jonathan’s presidency would be more stable for the North than a term from Obi, which could potentially delay the region’s return to power.
Sani’s viewpoint is rooted in the narrative that any southern candidate should complete a full term to equate it with the previous northern administration. As the political landscape evolves, the discussions around zoning and power-sharing continue to be pivotal in the lead-up to the elections.
