The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has stated that the recent threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to invade Nigeria to combat terrorism is a smokescreen for his dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s stance on various public issues.

In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi, Afenifere described the claims of government complicity in the killings of Christians as unfounded, asserting that they serve to justify aggressive actions against Nigeria. The organization pointed to economic motives behind Trump’s threats, suggesting that he aims to pressure President Tinubu into negotiations that could further American interests in Nigeria’s economy, particularly in arms sales.

Ajayi emphasized that Nigeria is a sovereign nation capable of addressing its own security challenges, noting that the government is actively working to enhance security, including recent changes in military leadership. He dismissed allegations of genocide against Christians, arguing that the real threat comes from bandits and terrorists targeting economic resources.

Afenifere warned against escalating tensions and emphasized the need for Nigeria to receive international support without resorting to threats of military action. The organization urged caution in public discourse about the country, emphasizing that negative portrayals can have lasting harm.

In response to the situation, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for unity among Nigerians to defend the country against external threats, underscoring the importance of protecting national investments and supporting the government’s initiatives.
