The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Jigawa State has urged political parties to educate their supporters on the importance of maintaining peace during the upcoming by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. This appeal was made by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Mahammad Lawan, during a recent stakeholders meeting in Dutse.
The by-election is taking place for the Garki/Babura federal constituency following the death of Hon. Isa Dogon Yaro in May 2024. Lawan stated that over 30% of the preparations for the election have been completed, including the upgrade of the Vivas voting machine, a significant milestone.
He emphasized the necessity of voter education and sensitization to ensure a successful electoral process. Lawan also called for cooperation from security agencies and other stakeholders to guarantee a peaceful election environment.
During the meeting, stakeholders expressed their views and discussed strategies for a smooth electoral process. They commended INEC for its progress in preparations and pledged their support for a peaceful election, highlighting the importance of free and fair conduct to avoid violence.
