The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally recognised a faction of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party backed by Nyesom Wike, marking a significant development in the party’s internal leadership dispute.
The electoral body reflected the update on its official platform, listing the newly recognised leadership of the opposition party. Among those acknowledged are Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, alongside other members of the party’s national executive.
The emergence of the recognised officials followed the PDP National Convention held in Abuja, where members of the committee were returned through a consensus arrangement. The development came after the dissolution of the party’s national caretaker committee, paving the way for a new leadership structure.
The recognised National Working Committee includes key positions such as Deputy National Chairmen for both North and South, National Treasurer, Organising Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Legal Adviser, Auditor, Women Leader, and Youth Leader, among others. The composition reflects a broad attempt to stabilise the party’s administrative framework ahead of future political activities.
This move by INEC is expected to have far-reaching implications for the internal dynamics of the PDP, particularly amid ongoing factional alignments within the party. Recognition by the electoral body is a critical factor in determining legitimacy in party leadership disputes under Nigerian electoral law.
