The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, where key electoral preparations were reviewed. In a statement issued by National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, INEC confirmed that the exercise would no longer proceed as earlier scheduled.
The Commission explained that voter revalidation remains an important mechanism for maintaining the integrity of the National Register of Voters, including verifying existing records, correcting personal data, and removing duplicate or ineligible entries. It also provides an opportunity for registered voters to update their information.
Despite the postponement, INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting credible elections, emphasizing that the decision does not affect its preparedness for the 2027 polls.
Prior to this development, the Commission had directed Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend all publicity and logistical preparations for the exercise. The directive, conveyed in a letter signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, instructed officials to await further guidance.
INEC expressed regret over any inconvenience caused and assured stakeholders that appropriate measures would be taken to ensure the continued credibility and inclusiveness of Nigeria’s electoral process.
