NIGER STATE, Nigeria — Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and Niger State Governor Umaru Bago have committed to rescuing all schoolchildren abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Agwara Local Government Area. Over 300 students were taken during the attack, described as one of the most distressing security breaches in recent memory.
Egbetokun addressed the worsening security situation in Niger State, labeling it a hotspot for criminal activities. He emphasized the need for a united response among government, security agencies, and local communities to combat the rising boldness of criminal groups.
The IGP confirmed additional tactical resources and intelligence platforms have been deployed in the region to aid in the rescue efforts. He expressed deep concern for the affected children and pledged that the police would not relent until all victims are safely recovered.
Governor Bago assured the IGP of the state’s full support and highlighted the importance of accurate data regarding the missing pupils. He noted the establishment of a registration desk by the Department of State Services (DSS) for parents, with efforts ongoing to compile a comprehensive list of abducted children.
The incident has prompted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order heightened security measures, including an extensive surveillance operation in forests where terrorists are believed to be hiding.
Efforts to rescue the students are ongoing, with a focus on unity and prompt action to ensure the safety of all individuals affected by these tragic incidents.
