Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, has stated that he would only contemplate switching parties if offered a presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to NNPP supporters at his residence, Kwankwaso emphasized that any defection must align with his political stature and reflect the interests of his extensive support base. He reiterated that his political journey, spanning over forty years, would not be accepted by his supporters unless it guarantees one of the top two positions in the upcoming elections.
Despite an invitation to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kwankwaso rejected the offer, citing a lack of substantial benefits. He expressed frustration over the absence of clear appointments or benefits from the APC negotiations.
Reaffirming his commitment to the NNPP’s Kwankwasiyya ideology, Kwankwaso highlighted the party’s focus on empowering the poor and promoting educational and economic development. He called for unity within Kano State to strengthen their chances in the 2027 elections, condemning potential defection by current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a betrayal.
Kwankwaso urged his supporters to remain calm and prayerful amid the political upheaval, advocating for a collective effort toward the party’s goals.
