Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said he is not in a position to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s candidacy in the 2027 general elections.

Otti made the statement on Friday during his monthly media chat, following remarks suggesting he would not stand against Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He explained that his position is based on principle, noting that he is not contesting for the presidency and therefore sees no reason to oppose another person’s ambition.

“I am not in a position to oppose the candidacy of the President. I am not running for President. Why would I oppose his presidency? I am also seeking a second term,” Otti said.

He added that governance operates at different levels, including federal, state, and local governments, and that cooperation among them is necessary for effective administration.

Otti also said decisions taken at the national level, such as those discussed at the National Economic Council, are binding once agreed upon, describing this as part of how democracy functions.

Addressing concerns about political alignment, the governor said such issues are often exaggerated by individuals with vested interests, rather than reflecting reality.

On speculation about his political future and possible defection from the Labour Party, Otti stated that the party had resolved its internal crisis following a Supreme Court ruling, adding that the party is stabilising.

He noted that party registration and internal preparations, including congresses and conventions, are ongoing, and therefore there is no basis for talk of defection at this time.
