Guinea Supreme Court Confirms Doumbouya’s Landslide Presidential Victory

Guinea’s Supreme Court has officially validated the presidential election victory of junta leader Mamady Doumbouya, confirming his overwhelming win with 86.72 percent of the total votes cast. The ruling affirms the provisional results earlier announced after the December 28 election.

Doumbouya’s closest challenger, Abdoulaye Yéro Baldé, secured 6.59 percent of the vote, a figure that remained unchanged in the final tally. Baldé had initially filed a legal challenge against the results but later withdrew his petition, paving the way for the court’s confirmation of the outcome.

The election was conducted in a tightly controlled political environment, with several prominent opposition figures excluded from the ballot. This has drawn criticism from observers who view the process as lacking broad-based competition, even as authorities maintain it followed legal procedures.

In his first national address following the court’s decision, Doumbouya called for unity and reconciliation, urging Guineans to move beyond political divisions. He emphasized the need to focus on nation-building and described Guinea as a single, indivisible country with a shared future.

Doumbouya pledged to work toward peace, justice, and shared prosperity, while asserting Guinea’s political and economic sovereignty. He presented his leadership as a fresh start for the nation and appealed for collective effort in shaping a new national direction.

The court’s ruling formally consolidates Doumbouya’s leadership years after he seized power through a military takeover that removed former president Alpha Condé. With judicial backing now secured, his authority has gained constitutional recognition, marking a significant turning point in Guinea’s political transition.
